Phil Neilson

Head of Emerging Technology and Continual Improvement

Children's charity

2023 will be the year that Social Care…'colleagues are listened to, respected, valued, supported and the whole industry is enabled to deliver better care'.

Phil is no stranger to digital transformation and continues to blaze a trail on multiple fronts since joining Barnado's last year.

As Head of Barnado's Emerging Technology and Continuous Improvement division which, amongst many things, supports the charity's #FutureBarnardos transformation programme. One of its central pillars is changing the way teams work, including reviewing its approach to risk in order to better equip the organisation for change in the digital age.

Barnado's commitment to continuous improvement means it is also overhauling its approach to data and analytics and building in-house expertise to turn the information it is required to gather into meaningful insights to improve services and better understand the needs and experiences of children and young people.

Phil is also Founder of Averio, where he's helping health and social care organisations ensure patient safety, prevent hospital admissions and improve diagnoses with pioneering health monitoring technology. Averio's sensor-based system eliminates the need for wearable devices, cameras and microphones, enabling automated monitoring and fall detection within 60 seconds.

Describe your 2022 in one word:

Varied.

What was your / your team’s biggest achievement in 2022?

Launching AVERio.

What was the biggest challenge and how did you overcome it?

Not being able to progress as fast as I wanted to. Patience and knowing that ‘good’ was better that ‘quick’.

What are your priorities for 2023?

Grow AVERio and challenge other social care platforms to step up to the plate in taking responsibility for delivering best-in-class service.

Name a skill or habit you would like to cultivate this year:

Focus. With such a busy work life maintaining focus on the priority tasks is critical to future success.

Which bit of tech (hardware or software) could you not live without?

Possibly the easiest question to answer… my phone oh no wait, my laptop - no, definitely Outlook! I’ll go with: phone with the Outlook app. That counts right?!

Android or iPhone?

iPhone.

Teams or Zoom?

Teams.
